HCCS has a well-rounded program that includes music theory, choir, and instrumental components for students in all grades.
Preschool and Kindergarten students have a number of aspects to their music program including instrumental, vocal and music in motion, ear training and the introduction to elementary music theory. Students get the opportunity to play percussion instruments and also enjoy learning basic one finger chords on the ukulele. Our young musicians also participate in our musical theatre productions.
Primary students have one choir period per week in addition to two music classes that provide students with time for instrumental lessons that include playing ukuleles, recorders, boom whackers, bucket drumming and percussion. Students also enjoy the music in motion and musical theatre component of the program and are given a solid musical foundation by learning the basic rudiments of music theory. Students are given the opportunity to perform for the school community and parents throughout the year.
Junior students at HCCS have one choir period per week in addition to a music class that gives time for instrumental instruction and a deeper look into the rudiments of music theory. Starting in the fall of 2016 these students will have a string program that includes group violin instruction which will teach the concept of open string bowing and the first position on the A and E strings. They will have opportunities to perform at our Christmas assembly, Mother’s Day Tea, and graduation. There are plans underway for an orchestra presentation in the spring of 2017. Students can bring their own violins or use instruments provided by the school.
Senior HCCS students can become skilled musicians who are given the opportunity to learn a musical instruments. Students are instructed in the rudiments of music theory and also have the opportunity to experience musical theatre. These students participate in a weekly choir period in addition to a weekly class for band and theory. There are a variety of instruments available to students. In the past students have learned the cello, flute, violin, piano, guitar, bass guitar, mandolin, percussion, and drums. All students in grades 4-8 have violin classes. Seniors will also have the opportunity to perform for the school community and family throughout the school year at scheduled events.
One of the exciting features of the music program at HCCS is the availability of private musical instruction at school. Lessons are offered in voice, wind, string instruments and percussion, and music therapy and theory. Prep for RCM (Royal Conservatory of Music) exams are also available. This enrichment opportunity is provided by Mrs. Woolford. Inquiries can be made by contacting her directly at 613-246-4235.
